The most epic facebook comment I’ve ever left. (about abortion)

OKAY. This is everything I want to say about abortion.

(Note: I use “you” as in others. Not a specific person)

Do you have internet connection? Can you pay for the food you eat? Did you go to college? You’re far more privileged than you think. The percentage of all abortion patients under the poverty line was 42% in 2008 (and has raised since). (http://www.guttmacher.org/media/nr/2010/05/04/index.html)

This privilege makes the decision for you easy if you get pregnant. While it made me financially harder for you, you are not impoverished. Making the decision to get an abortion is not an easy thing for anyone. By forcing someone to have a child who is already under the poverty line, you raise the chance of killing the mother during childbirth significantly. (http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/info/AMR51/019/2010/en)

A child will be born in to a world where they won’t have a fair chance at life. No/poor healthcare, poor living arrangements, etc.

So why do poor women have babies then? Think about it. Two parent households make more money than a single parent household (especially if there is already a child in the family). By having a child with someone, the women could be trying to make a man stay in her life. All too often though, men leave once they find out they have gotten a woman pregnant.

Adoption - A solution in theory. I couldn’t find a more current statistic, but in 2008 there were 426,000 children in foster care. Banning abortions would make this number astronomical. (http://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/factsheets/foster.cfm#key)

I understand that abortion is so closely linked to religion that it is nearly impossible to change someone’s mind about it, but I want people to think about WHY people would get an abortion. Not just “it’s bad.”

TO OTHER POSTERS:

Once again to the person above me. My tax money goes to the death penalty. I am VERY against the death penalty.

Immediate psychological issues will always come with the loss of a pregnancy. Whether is be an abortion or a spontaneous abortion (aka miscarriage). It’s a traumatic experience in one’s life. But having a child when one is not ready for it will also ruin 2 or more people’s lives and may cause psychological issues.

According to several studies, there is no major difference in mental health due to having an abortion or keeping a child. (Major B, Cozzarelli C, Cooper ML, et al. (August 2000). “Psychological responses of women after first-trimester abortion”. Arch. Gen. Psychiatry 57 (8): 777–84

All I’ma say is, sources of information and studies done make me happy when compared to people’s irrational fears and ideas thrown on the interwebs.
